NBA Free Agency: Tracy McGrady, Detroit Pistons Try To Reclaim Spotlight

August 12th, 2010

When it was announced that Tracy McGrady would be joining the Detroit Pistons on a one-year contract for the veteran's minimum salary, it brought to a close a long and winding odyssey that saw McGrady, a two-time NBA scoring champion and seven-time All-Star, holding private workouts for teams around the league, most notably the Los Angeles Clippers and the Chicago Bulls.

It also confirmed what seems to be another trend of this most remarkable summer in NBA history.

No, not bona fide All-Stars switching jerseys and shifting the balance of power in the NBA, though that in itself is enough of a storyline to carry basketball through until the season tips off.

Rather, T-Mac's arrival in Detroit is yet another example of an NBA superstar, a stalwart of the first Post-Jordan generation, struggling to find a willing suitor now that he is undoubtedly past his prime.

This rather exclusive club includes, among others, Shaquille O'Neal, who just this week made official his stewardship of the elderly Boston Celtics; and Allen Iverson, who has become something of an anathema to NBA franchises over the past year or so.

Though great players changing uniforms late in their careers is nothing new (Gary Payton and Karl Malone in 2003, Michael Jordan at the end of his playing days, etc.), rarely have former league MVPs and first-team All-NBA performers struggled so mightily to find even the smallest niches to fill, both in terms of salary and playing style.

Shaq was fortunate to find one on a championship contender.  Considering the difficulties AI has faced in his search for a new home, perhaps T-Mac should consider himself among the lucky ones, even though his fortune is limited to a minimum contract on a team with its status as a perennial Eastern Conference powerhouse a distant sight in the proverbial rearview mirror.

And while the Big Shamrock's new digs may net him some more jewelry, McGrady's latest circumstances are, arguably, far more intriguing, as they smack of desperation as much as poetic justice.

As much for T-Mac as for the Detroit Pistons.

The irony of this move, which has received relatively little media attention when considering the parties involved, runs so deep that it could take the duration of McGrady's stay in Motown to unfold all of the layers.

To start, let's rewind the clock back 10 years, to August of 2000, when, as a budding young star, McGrady left the Toronto Raptors—a team he'd led to its first-ever playoff appearance alongside his cousin Vince Carter—for Orlando, in a sign-and-trade deal following a period of free agent courtship that saw the Chicago Bulls, among others, make unsuccessful bids for the native Floridian's services.

With the Magic, McGrady was expected to play sidekick to Grant Hill, who had come over via free agency from (you guessed it!) the Detroit Pistons.  The Magic anticipated that their new duo would lead the franchise back to the place of prominence it once held before Shaquille O'Neal bolted for Los Angeles.

As the story goes, things didn't turn out quite as Orlando had hoped.  The ankle injury that Hill sustained in his last playoff series with the Pistons never seemed to heal properly while he was with the Magic, as he played in a mere 47 games during his first four seasons in Florida, including a 2002-2003 campaign that he was forced to sit out entirely.

Meanwhile, following that very season, McGrady led his eighth-seeded Magic squad in a thrilling first round playoff series, which saw Orlando take a 3-1 series lead against (here we go again) Detroit, only to watch it slip away as the Pistons shut down T-Mac and claimed victory in seven games.

The next year, McGrady and the Pistons each enjoyed their finest years, respectively.  While T-Mac once again laid claim to the NBA scoring title, a statistical achievement bolstered by his career-best 62-point performance against the Washington Wizards, the Pistons won the 2004 league title by defeating their old Western Conference rival, the Lakers, in what was deemed a "five-game sweep" in the NBA Finals.

Following these noteworthy campaigns, each endured some turmoil as they approached the downward slope of the mountain of success that had been scaled. T-Mac struggled to fit in with the Yao Ming-led Houston Rockets after being traded, along with Juwan Howard, in a deal that sent Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley to Orlando.

The Pistons finished the season with 54 victories and made it back to the Finals, where they lost to the San Antonio Spurs in seven games, though not before taking part in one of the ugliest moments in NBA history, an end-of-game brawl between players and fans often referred to as the "Malice at the Palace."

The years that followed saw T-Mac and the Pistons each attempting to reclaim their former glory with mixed results, though McGrady saw his fortunes take a turn for the worst far sooner than did Detroit's.

While Chauncey Billups and Co. extended their streak of consecutive Conference Finals appearances to six, by 2008 McGrady had earned a new nickname thanks to his recurring back problems and myriad other injuries that plagued him as a result–Half-Man, Half-A-Season.

It wasn't until the last two years that McGrady and Detroit synchronized their simultaneous swan-dive into insignificance.

As T-Mac's knees began to crumble, Pistons GM Joe Dumars, in his infinite wisdom (see Darko Milicic, 2003 NBA Draft), shipped Chauncey Billups, the engine behind the Motor City's six years of postseason success, to Denver in exchange for a–shell-of-his-former-self Allen Iverson in a move that Dumars claimed was done in the spirit of rebuilding.

This was shortly after his decision to replace the venerable Flip Saunders with the untested Michael Curry in one of the more puzzling coaching changes in recent memory.

Of course, it didn't take long for Dumars to try to rectify his own mistakes, choosing first to replace Curry, after one year, with former Cavaliers assistant John Kuester.

He then stumbled over himself to offer bloated deals to Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva—signings that precluded the Pistons from participating wholeheartedly in this summer's Free Agent Olympics and and left the franchise instead with two of the NBA's most notable contractual albatrosses.

That's not to say that T-Mac did any better for himself.  After electing to prematurely end his 2008-2009 season by having his knees operated on without notifying the Rockets, McGrady became embroiled in a much-publicized dispute with coach Rick Adelman and the Houston front office, which resulted in T-Mac landing with the Knicks in a three-team deal this past February.

Though McGrady displayed flashes of his former self early on in New York, his efforts did not garner much national attention over the final two months of the regular season.

And so, after a month that saw the Pistons lay more-or-less dormant while T-Mac zigzagged the country in search of suitors, their paths have finally converged.  The circle of irony is closed at last.

The oft-injured, past-his-prime, former superstar has finally arrived in Detroit, with muted applause, to play for a team in the midst of a rebuilding period that has proved to be perhaps as painful as that which McGrady's body has undergone over the same span.

A team that was certainly not McGrady's first choice—that, in fact, is the historic and geographic rival of the team he so desperately wanted to play for, the up-and-coming Chicago Bulls.

That's not to say that the two parties won't prosper together.  Who knows?  Maybe T-Mac will return with a vengeance, leading the Pistons back to the postseason now that his body is sound and his competitive fire has been stoked by his many doubters around the league.

While the likelihood of such a renaissance is difficult to predict, it's certainly a story of unusual, if currently unappreciated, intrigue, if not for its own sake—as the revival of an iconic franchise led by one of the most prolific scorers of the 2000s—then for the sake of the bigger picture of the 2010-2011 NBA season, of which it will be a part.

Strange to think, 10 years after T-Mac's first foray into free agency, that Shaq would be playing for the Celtics, Grant Hill would be healthy and playing in all of his team's games, Vince Carter would be part of a championship-caliber duo in Orlando, that Allen Iverson would effectively be shunned by the league he once towered over.

That Tracy McGrady would be attempting to, at once, lift himself and the Detroit Pistons out of the quagmire of basketball irrelevance.

The NBA—Where WTF?! Happens.

Los Angeles Still Best In West: 2010 Western Conference Power Rankings

August 12th, 2010

NBA Primetime’s Brandon Ribak breaks down the 2010 NBA Power Rankings into two parts. This article focuses on the top eight teams that will make the playoffs out of the Western Conference.

For a look at the top eight teams that will make the playoffs out of the Eastern Conference, please click here.

Western Conference Power Rankings

1. Los Angeles Lakers - Regular Season Record 57-25, .695 PCT

The back-to-back champions signed defender Matt Barnes this offseason, in addition to their new starting point-guard Steve Blake. Blake is a solid overall player that will fill in well at the one-spot for LA. With the East emerging as the new West, expect the Lakers to win well over 50 games and fulfill the one seed yet again.

2. Oklahoma City Thunder - Regular Season Record 51-31, .622 PCT

The Thunder have surely come a long way from their inaugural 23-win season back in 2008-09. With Kevin Durant rising as the league's most dominant scorer, Oklahoma City has become one of the biggest threats in the NBA. And with teammates such as Russell Westbrook, Jeff Green, and James Harden surrounding KD, you can expect big things from this young and upcoming squad this season.

3. Dallas Mavericks - Regular Season Record 50-32, .610 PCT

The Mavs head into the upcoming season looking indestructible, that is, on paper. The Mavs acquired Tyson Chandler from the Bobcats, amping their roster to a league best four seven-footers. The Mavericks definitely have the talent to bring home a title; the only question is whether or not they have the championship mentality to actually win one.

4. Denver Nuggets - Regular Season Record 48-34, .585 PCT

With head coach George Karl back in action, the Nuggets core still intact, and the signing of Al Harrington this offseason, Denver will have an opportunity to once again pull off an upset during the postseason. If the team's big men can remain healthy for the playoffs, this is one team not to be reckoned with.

5. Portland Trail Blazers - Regular Season Record 48-34, .585 PCT

Portland fired General Manager Kevin Pritchard and signed Wesley Matthews this offseason. With Greg Oden reportedly on track to return for the start of the 2010-11 season and the rest of the roster healthy, the Blazers certainly have the ability to make a strong push for a top seed in the West. After a disappointing season last year, Portland can really start to turn things around during the upcoming season.

6. Utah Jazz - Regular Season Record 47-35, .573 PCT

While Utah lost one of their core pieces in Carlos Boozer, they definitely made up for it when they acquired Al Jefferson from the Minnesota Timberwolves this offseason. With Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson teaming up in the frontcourt and Mehmet Okur coming off the bench, the Jazz, led by point-guard Deron Williams, have a great chance to dominate in the West (especially with Raja Bell defending every team's best player).

7. San Antonio Spurs - Regular Season Record 45-37, .550 PCT

The Spurs re-signed Richard Jefferson and signed Tiago Splitter this offseason. Splitter is a superb talent who has great potential to excel in the NBA, but the Spurs' biggest focus is on Mr. Duncan. How much gas is left in this guy's tank? Last season, Duncan posted career lows in MPG, PPG, and RPG. It hurts to say that, at the age of 34, Mr. Nice Guy could be on the verge of a major decline, putting the Spurs in big trouble.

8. Houston Rockets - Regular Season Record 43-39, .525. PCT

The Rockets have a good chance to make the playoffs this season as long as Yao is on the court. With last season's Most Improved Player Aaron Brooks leading the way for Houston and the support of Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, and Brad Miller, the squad should be back on track to contending for a playoff seed this year.

Breaking It Down: A Full Analysis of The Miami Heat’s 2010-’11 Schedule.

August 11th, 2010

With the free agency period nearly over and every player signed, the void between this star struck offseason and the beginning of NBA preseason has been filled with the full release of the NBA schedule. The Miami Heat's might be the most anticipated of them all due to all the talk of the team possibly breaking the single-season record for wins in a season.

While it is a considerable stretch that Miami Thrice could break 72 wins in their first season together, it is an interesting debate to see if they could actually eclipse the mark set by some of the greatest players of all time. After a look at the schedule though, there is a possibility that they might not lose a game until late November when they travel three hours to Orlando.

The first three games of the schedule are a bit rough with the season opener in Boston, followed by a game against the Philadelphia 76ers on the road, and then ended with the home opener against the Orlando Magic. Then the Heat get to rest up for about two weeks before they get real competition again.

Two days after the Magic game is a road game against the New Jersey Nets, which is followed by easier competition in a home against against the Timberwolves, and then an away game in New Orleans. Following that, the Heat get a six-game homestand against less than stellar competition besides the Boston Celtics and Utah Jazz. The Suns, Nets, Raptors, and Bobcats all take a stop at the American Airlines Arena before the Heat ship off to Memphis.

To be honest, the Heat got it a little easy with the first 20 games of the season with no test in the schedule aside from the first two games. Not until December do the Heat get a road trip which even then isn't that impressive with the Bucks, Jazz, Kings, and Warriors in five nights. It gets considerably difficult in January when they face a five game onslaught on the road against Milwaukee, Portland, the L.A. Clippers, Denver, and Chicago.

There remains two four-game road trips left on the schedule with each of them against less than quality opponents. If you assumed that based on the first week of the schedule that the Heat would get a difficult year, you'd be completely wrong. The Heat only have one difficult road trip and it's not until mid-January. With only four somewhat challenging opponents in November, Miami has the chance to enter the month of December with less than five losses if this Heat team forms their chemistry early.

Miami gets another six-game homestand in March against quality opponents in Chicago, Portland, the L.A. Lakers, Memphis, San Antonio, and Oklahoma City. Even at home these games are a test. The Heat play six of their final nine games on the road with the last two on the road against Atlanta and Toronto to end the season.

Marquee Match-up's

Since the opening week and holiday schedule's have already been announced prior to the full release of the season, we will only discuss the marquee match-up's aside from what we already know.

November 24-at Orlando

This is the Miami Heat's first road test in November and it comes at the end of the month. Following a few easy games, it'll be a test to see how the Heat react when they have to face a quality opponent again in a hostile environment even if it is three hours away. Games against the Orlando Magic throughout the season will also be interesting to watch to see how well the Heat play Dwight Howard.

Joel Anthony can play Howard well on the defensive end, but it'll only be so long before he gets into foul trouble. Erik Spoelstra will most likely have to send the majority of his centers to defend Howard and give up some fouls in the process. Considering this could be a preview of the Eastern Conference championship, early preparation will be needed.

December 17-at New York

This is the first match-up of the season between the Heat and Knicks and it could result in a rivalry renewed. The 1990's featured constant battles between the two teams, but with the Heat moving in one direction and the Knicks moving in another, the rivalry died due to the Knicks suffering inside and out as a franchise.

After some quality pick-up's in Amare Stoudemire and Raymond Felton however, the Knicks could give the Heat a run for their money if they impress early in the season. If the Knicks assume that their strategy of trying to outscore the other team is going to win them the game, they'll have another thing coming. It'll take more than offense to beat a team like the Heat this time around.

January 7-15, at Milwaukee, at Portland, at L.A. Clippers, at Denver, and at Chicago.

The second road trip of the season for the Heat, but probably the hardest week of the season for Miami as well. Four of these teams are coming off of playoff berths with all five of them significantly improving over the offseason. Jeff Van Gundy reported a few days ago that the Heat might not lose two games in a row this season, but if it was to happen, it would happen here.

Not only are the teams difficult, but the road alone is unbelievable. They start out in Wisconsin before heading out to Oregon two days later. They get a three-day rest before heading out to California and then Colorado for a back-to-back before the trip finally ends in Illinois two days later.

A week away from home will be a sight to behold to see how much endurance and ambition this Heat team has against quality opponents on the road and in a short amount of time.

January 30-at Oklahoma City

Unfortunately for NBA fans, the schedulers decided that the Heat's first match-up against the Oklahoma City Thunder will occur in the year 2011. The Thunder have established themselves as the newest threat in the West and the Heat would be the perfect team to play against.

The Thunder and Heat, even before LeBron and their new roster, are arguably the most exciting teams in the NBA and no fan should miss out on a game like this with the score probably reaching into the 110's and onslaught of Top 10 worthy plays for ESPN.

March 10-vs Los Angeles Lakers

The second of a two game series between the powerhouse's of the East and West coast with the last game being in Miami. Even before the new roster, Dwyane Wade and the Heat have always given the Los Angeles Lakers a ride. Every Heat fan remembers Kobe Bryant's "luckiest shot of his career" and every Laker fan remembers the overtime loss in the second game of the series last year.

With the Celtics deteriorating, the Heat and Lakers could form the next big rivalry in the NBA over the next few years until Kobe Bryant's retirement. Not only that, but this could be the last time these two teams play until a potential match-up in late May for the NBA Finals.

March 29-at Cleveland

The teams first play on December 2nd, but you could argue that this game could feature more bad blood than the first match-up between the two. Because the Cavs have significantly deteriorated as a team, this could be the game that features a potential sweep by the Heat in the fourth game of the series.

There is no doubt that it will be a sellout once again, but the crowd at the Quicken Loans Arena could be more riled up than ever if LeBron and Co. think they can go to Cleveland and sweep his former team. They might need more security than the game in early December and this time, they may need to use it.

I was quite surprised with the Heat's schedule due to how easy they made it aside from the week-long road trip. The month of November features three difficult games with a six-game homestand to allow the Heat to get the ball rolling and form the right chemistry against inferior opponents. This might open the door for the Heat to truly persue the 72-win record that analysts have been saying could be broken next season.

Two months still remain between now and the first preseason game, but there will be plenty of breaking down of every team's schedule. The Heat's schedule is one worth noting though because of just how realistic 72 wins can be for the Triofive.

2010-11 NBA Schedule: Cleveland Cavaliers Announce Full Slate

August 11th, 2010

After an ever-so-small portion of opening week highlights and Christmas/MLK Jr. Day games were announced last Tuesday, the NBA released the full 82-game schedule for each team earlier this afternoon.

As announced last week, the Cavs will open the season at home on Wednesday, Oct. 27 against the Boston Celtics for the third consecutive season. Also as expected, the Cavs will face Toronto, Sacramento, and Atlanta in their first four games.

Fans will get their first looks at the No. 1 and No. 2 picks in this year's draft early—Cleveland travels to face Evan Turner and Philadelphia on Nov. 5 and then takes on John Wall and the Wizards in Washington on Nov. 6.

Games against Miami will be played on Dec. 2 (home), Dec. 15 (away), Jan. 31 (away), and Mar. 29 (home). The Cavs will get their cracks against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers on Jan. 11 (away) and Feb. 16 (home).

The Cavs will have eight road trips of three games or more while having just four homestands of three-plus games. The longest road trip, as usual, is in January, with a five-game Western conference journey to Golden State, Phoenix, L.A. (Lakers), Utah, and Denver. They also have a four-game trip in December that will take them to Houston, Oklahoma City, Miami, and Indiana.

The most pivotal stretch of the season might come in February, as the Cavs will have eight straight games in the Q and not have to leave Cleveland for over four weeks. They host Detroit, L.A. (Clippers), Washington, L.A. (Lakers), Houston, New York, Philadelphia, and San Antonio.

Several of those games are winnable, and if the Cavs are fighting for a playoff spot they'll have to defend home court.

The Cavs also have a five-game stretch at the Q from March 21-29, hosting Orlando, New Jersey, Detroit, Atlanta, and Miami. Nineteen of the team's final 30 games will be at home.

Only two of the Cavs' final nine opponents (Chicago and Milwaukee) made the playoffs in 2009-10. Last year, Miami used a weak schedule down the stretch to catapult into the fifth seed. Similarly, the Cavs could use a competitive stretch in April to make one final playoff push should they be in the running for one of the final spots.

There will be 22 back-to-back nights this year—six will be of the home-road variety, eight are road-home affairs, and eight more are road-road contests. The toughest back-to-back is undoubtedly at the end of January, when the Cavs play at Orlando on the 30th and at Miami on the 31st.

As of now, the Cavs are only scheduled to play on national TV three times: the first game against Miami on Dec. 2 (TNT), at Phoenix on Jan. 9 (NBATV), and vs. New Orleans on Mar. 6 (ESPN).

Other highlights include: a road-home back-to-back with New Jersey on Nov. 9 and Nov. 10, a New Year's Day game against Derrick Rose and the Bulls in Chicago (7:00 ET), visits from Dwight Howard and the Magic on Dec. 28 (7:00 ET) and Mar. 21 (7:00 ET), and the lone visit from Kevin Durant and Oklahoma City on Sunday, Mar. 13 at 1:00.
